Australia: Meta, Google will have to pay tax on news

Melbourne. The Australian Government announced to impose tax on big digital platforms and search engines that do not share revenue with local news media organizations. Australia’s Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said on Thursday that the new rules will apply to companies with an annual income of more than Rs 1300 crore from January next year. These include companies like Meta, Google, Alphabet and Bytedance. However, it is not yet clear how much tax will have to be paid. This decision has been taken after Meta refused to extend the 3-year agreement to pay local media companies. Earlier, the Australian government had created the ‘New Media Bargaining Code’ in 2011.
